"The three rules of the Librarians of Time and Space are: 1) Silence; 2) Books must be returned no later than the date last shown; and 3) Do not interfere with the nature of causality." — Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett (via turtle-recall)
"Sex is great, sure. But the feeling of a book in your hands, dragging lightly over the paper, dampening your finger to flip the pages. Reading is intimate, for me, more so than sex. It requires all of your attention, to hold the book and read the words. Holding conversations in your hands and being able to touch them. Wrapping yourself in its arms and letting it take you somewhere new, and trusting it to do so. The book will never judge if you put it down to do another task, it will simply reopen to the last page and welcome you in again. No questions asked. Its an inanimate object that requires so much intimacy to experience fully, to allow yourself to indulge and giving you the chance to suspend disbelief, even for a few minutes. Its a private thing when we read books, it has become more private and secretive than our sex lives. We cover certain book titles with magazines or objects in fear of being judged, we avoid certain sections in a book store out of fear, we are almost ashamed to read in public. Sex is everywhere plastered on a wall and just lingering in the air, its not special anymore. The intimacy of reading a book is never discussed, the emotions it provoked. Just sex is talked about. And thats why I like books more, its so special its worth hiding from the people who would love nothing more than to destroy its intimacy and make it into a billion dollar movie. Some things are better left on the pages, for people willing to do the leg work to get to know the book and interpret what it means to them. Reading is personal, private and very intimate. End of story." — A.K.R (via iamsideways)
"I was raised among books, making invisible friends in pages that seemed cast from dust and whose smell I carry on my hands to this day." — Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Shadow of the Wind
